Winner of a 2026 JUNO Award for Traditional Roots Album of the Year,
Morgan Toney is a Mi’kmaq singer-songwriter and fiddler from Cape Breton, Nova Scotia. His music blends Celtic folk and traditional Mi’kmaq music. He is a member of the Wagmatcook First Nation.
Drawing on thousands of years of tradition, Toney marries the Scottish heritage of this Nova Scotia island with Mi’kmaq songs, stories, and language in his own musical genre, “Mi’kmaltic”—a fusion of Mi’kmaq and Celtic.
His new album, Heal the Divide, released on March 7, 2025, under the Indigenous label Ishkōdé Records, recognizes the difficult history experienced by the L’nu’k (the Mi’kmaq people) and all First Nations in Canada, while celebrating L’nu heritage within Canadian culture. This album is part of Toney’s broader vision to bring people together, set aside our differences, and move forward together toward what he calls the “Promised Land.”
The Morgan Toney Trio also includes Keith Mullins on guitar, vocals, and percussion, as well as Ryan Roberts on mandolin and vocals. Together, they have created a cultural fusion, a bridge between two worlds, and a path toward truth and reconciliation.
